Welcome

This blog is my attempt to share information I have found
interesting or edifying in my daily Christian walk.
Hopefully, someone else will benefit from something on here.

A Berean is a person who searches the scriptures daily to see if
what is heard is true according to the scriptures.

Acts 17:11
"Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians,
for they received the message with great eagerness and examined
the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." NIV

Checking For Life - Prayer

While checking for evidences of life and growth, what about your prayers?

Do You Pray?

I ask whether you pray, because a habit of prayer is one of the surest marks of a true Christian.

All the children of God on earth are alike in this respect. From the moment there is any life and reality about their religion, they pray. Just as the first sign of life in an infant when born into the world is the act of breathing, so the first act of men and women when they are born again is praying.

This is one of the common marks of all the elect of God, “They cry unto him day and night” (Luke 18:1). The Holy Spirit, who makes them new creatures, works in them the feeling of adoption, and makes them cry, “Abba, Father” (Rom. 8:15). The Lord Jesus, when he quickens them, gives them a voice and a tongue, and says to them, “Be dumb no more.” God has no dumb children. It is as much a part of their new nature to pray, as it is of a child to cry. They see their need of mercy and grace. They feel their emptiness and weakness. They can not do otherwise than they do. They must pray.

...

But this I do say, that not praying is a clear proof that a man is not yet a true Christian. He cannot really feel his sins. He cannot love God. He cannot feel himself a debtor to Christ. He cannot long after holiness. He cannot desire heaven. He has yet to be born again. He has yet to be made a new creature. He may boast confidently of election, grace, faith, hope, and knowledge, and deceive ignorant people. But you may rest assured it is all vain talk if he does not pray.

"If I fail to spend two hours in prayer each morning,
the devil gets the victory through the day.
I have so much business I cannot get on
without spending three hours daily in prayer.
~ Martin Luther ~

"Prayer will make a man cease from sin,
or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer."
~ John Bunyon ~

"The little estimate we put on prayer
is evidence from the little time we give to it."

~ E.M. Bounds ~

Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. ESV

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
ESV

"You may as soon find a living man that does not breath,
as a living Christian that does not pray."
~ Matthew Henry ~

Is there evidence of growth and life?

I cannot remember word for word what it said in the book I read, by J.C.Ryle, but it was that if, now we are Christians, we do not pray, how are we any different than before we were saved?

We certainly did not pray before we were saved, since we had no need of God, or so we thought.

Since now, we are Christians, how is it we still suppose to carry on the Christian walk without the Saviour?

To neglect prayer it to say to God that we do not need Him, as we did before our salvation.

"But the end of all things is at hand, therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers."
1 Peter 4v7

God bless.

Dora,

Thanks for adding that, it fits so well. That is definitely something to ponder.

I'm going to be honest here and say that there are times when I do not pray. (a long time ago anyway) There are four times now that I have wandered away from the Lord (yes I counted), doing my own thing and during that time I was miserable and did not pray. This was because I was running scared because of my sins, my guilt, my fear of facing Him etc. I knew that I would have to approach Him and confess but during that time (of which they all seemed to last about 3 months each time) I was far away from Him.

But each time the Lord has brought me back to Him, (and gently too I might add which astonishes me) and then my prayer and fellowship continues with Him.

If we are honest with ourselves, (not saying you guys aren't - just making a general statement) then we will admit that there are peaks and valleys in our walks. I don't believe that Christians can be walking on sunshine constantly because we simply aren't cut out for that in this flesh. We are sheep, we are weak, we are stupid, we will stray but our Good Shepherd will always lead us back to Him if we are truly His.

But I agree with you, being in constant prayer is a good indicator as to where we stand with Christ. It is a part of our new nature but sometimes the sinful nature takes over and we don't pray. And that's why we are to walk in the Spirit, not the flesh.

Great post Berean Wife!!!!!

Carol,

You are right that our prayer life is a good indicator of how our Christian Walk is going. If we could only recognize when we are beginning to neglect our prayer life then we might be able to temper our wandering and stay on the right path, not that any of us can all the time.

Those who have ceased having a prayer life will be those who struggle the most. If we are not listening to the Good Shepherd, we are doomed to stray. Thankfully, He will lead us back, some gently and some with more discipline, but He will never let one of His sheep stray for too long.
